Self-referentiality of Justified Knowledge
نویسنده
چکیده
The language of justification logic makes it possible to define what it means for knowledge/belief described by an epistemic modality to be self-referential. Building on an earlier result that S4 and its justification counterpart LP describe knowledge that is self-referential, we show that the same is true for K4, D4, and T with their justification counterparts, whereas for K and D self-referentiality can be avoided. Therefore, no single modal axiom from the standard axiomatizations of these logics can be responsible for self-referentiality.

Prehistoric Phenomena and Self-referentiality in Realization Procedure
By terms-allowed-in-types capacity, the Logic of Proofs LP includes formulas of the form t : φ(t), which have self-referential meanings. In this paper, “prehistoric phenomena” in a Gentzen-style formulation of modal logic S4 are defined. A special phenomenon, i.e., “left prehistoric loop”, is then shown to be necessary for self-referentiality in S4-LP realization.
متن کاملKnowledge as Viewed by Muslim
There are three views among Muslim thinkers concerning the nature of knowledge. Fakhr al-Din Razi holds that knowledge is self- evident and notdefinable, while Juwaini and his pupil Ghazzali hold that the concept of knowledge is theoretical and its definition is also too hard. There is another approach by the majority of Muslim theologians and philosophers who maintain that the concept of kn...
متن کاملOn Knowledge, Strings, and Paradoxes
A powerful syntactic theory as well as expressive modal logics have to deal with self-referentiality. Self-referentiality and paradoxes seem to be close neighbours and depending on the logical system, they have devastating consequences, since they introduce contradictions and trivialise the logical system. There is a large amount of diierent attempts to tackle these problems. Some of them are c...
متن کاملHereby explained: an event-based account of performative utterances
Several authors propose that performative speech acts are self-guaranteeing due to their self-referential nature (Searle 1989; Jary 2007). The present paper offers an analysis of self-referentiality in terms of truth conditional semantics, making use of Davidsonian events. I propose that hereby can denote the ongoing act of information transfer (more mundanely, the utterance) which thereby ente...
متن کاملLevels of Linguistic Representation in Broca's Aphasia: Implicitness and Referentiality of Arguments1
We investigated the interaction between different levels of linguistic representation and the syntactic deficit in Broca’s aphasia. We varied a semantic property of arguments referentiality, and a phonetic property implicitness, and crossed them with the constructions that expose the syntactic deficit in agrammatic Broca’s aphasia. Our results show that referentiality and implicitness of argume...
